Becky's Notes
I had the pleasure of participating in the workshop titled "Keep Informed Without Being OverWhelmed with Speakers: Annaliese Hoeling of NTEN, Patricia Perkins of VISTA, and Sean Watson, of TechEffect. Annaliese Hoeling provided the slideshow and slideshow link below: "Nonprofit tech resources (from an Accidental Techie)": http://www.slideshare.net/ntenannaliese/nonprofit-tech-resources-from-an... In Annaliese's presentation, she pointed out that instead of feeling distracted and isolated, we could purposefully set goals, align targets, and use social media and online communities to reach our organizational goals.
Annaliese suggested we use training webinars to learn how to effectively use social media, attend conferences to make contacts with peers, perform research on best practices, and follow blogs of experts to stay informed of best practices. Annaliese said that in addition to twitter, facebook, and linkedin, we could track information with Goggle alerts, organize information with delicious, and connect with affinity groups with Linkedin groups. In her slide show, Annaliese provided dozens of links to get all of us organized.
Patricia Perkins reinforced many of Annaliese points, and said that we should all be aware of techsoup.org, to acquire software at low costs, for non-profits: http://home.techsoup.org/pages/default.aspx
Finally, Sean Watson recalled his journey from working only with pc's, going back to paper, and now trying to work primarily with his mac to organize his information for his consulting, clients, and business. Sean recommended that to get organized, we make sure we use the text "Getting Things Done" by David Allen: http://www.davidco.com/

Speakers: Mark Dibner, Founder and Acting Executive Director, Kramden Institute; Paula Jones, Director of Technology and Administration, N.C. Center for Nonprofits; Karen Ondrick, Program Director for Community and Government Relations, Lenovo
Description: There are many technology professionals that want to donate their services (networking, web design, social media, graphic design, research, etc.) to nonprofit organizations. Likewise, nonprofits would like to attract such donated services because they rarely have staff qualified to perform those services. The pitfall is usually miscommunication, which leads to misunderstandings and unrealistic expectations that creates missed opportunities and frustrating experiences. This session is designed to help both those who want to donate professional services and those who want to work with volunteers. We’ll provide a case study and provide tips to make your next project a win-win for all involved.
